Omtale

ENGLISH
Amin, 36 years old, well educated, and successful. On the surface, all seems perfect, but when his boyfriend Kasper proposes to him, Amin is struck by anxiety. A fear of letting someone all the way inside. No one knows Amins history, not even his future husband. If Amin is to live his life to the fullest, he will have to open up about what he, as a child, was ordered to keep secret. For the first time, Amin tells his story.

Amins recollection of his past takes him back to a happy childhood in the 1980’s Kabul, with A-Ha in his Walkman, and Jean Claude Van Damme-poster on the wall of his room. But the memories also bring him back to a ruthless civil war, memories that shifted his safe existence to a warzone that split his family. The war sends 11-year-old Amin and his family on a dangerous escape, that ends five years later when he arrives in Denmark – all alone.

FLEE is a touching documentary that used beautiful animation to tell Amins story, the jury at Sundance pointed out in their reasoning how the film in a unique way presents its audience with a huge global problem, wrapped up in an intimate story.

The film is built on personal dialogues between two friend, an intimate, touching and exciting talk – and we as the audience get’s to be the fly on the wall.

Jonas Poher Rasmussen is the director of the film, but also Amins childhood friend and the film’s interviewer. His background is from film and radio documentarian for DR-TV.

Director statement:

FLEE is a story about a lot of things: Escape, love, sexuality, and family. But if I have to summarise the film into one sentence it is a story about a man who tries to find his home.

Press statements:

“FLEE is a remarkably humanizing and complex film, expanding and expounding the kind of story that’s too easily simplified.”
– The Guardian

“It’s activism, therapy, and great cinema all at once”
-IndieWire

“…the film is an incredibly intimate act of sharing.”
